Social, Ethical and Environmental Responsibility
“As a jewelry designer and founder of the Martha Almeida Jewellery brand, and deeply aware of the environmental, human and social impact that the jewelry industry has on the world, I believe that luxury consumption must be conscious and must be synonymous with sustainability and ethics.”
— Marta Almeida
Our Commitment
We believe it is our responsibility to create a positive impact on the jewelry industry, the community and the world, covering three main areas: our products, people and the preservation of the planet.
Every major decision we make, from our precious metals to the beautiful packaging that accompanies each MAJ piece of jewelry, is always considered with sustainability in mind.
The challenges are enormous and we don't have all the answers, but we are constantly evaluating the impacts of our decisions and exploring all options so that we can make the best choices.
Our Jewels
All of our precious metals suppliers are certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, ensuring that all practices across the supply chain adhere to rigorous ethical, social and environmental standards.
Martha Almeida jewelry is made from 925 silver, using 50% recycled silver. Currently, the recycled silver we use in our creations comes from three main recycling sources:
- Waste from Our Production, reusing all the pieces of silver left over from our manufacturing process, from filings to small cuts. Nothing is lost, everything is transformed.
- Reuse of Discontinued Jewelry, giving a new opportunity to silver pieces that are no longer part of our collections and that have not been sold. Through refining, and with the same quality as the fine silver extracted, this silver gains a new life in our creations.
- Companies supplying recycled fine silver.
By 2025, we aim to increase the use of recycled fine silver in jewelry production to 75%.
Our Process
Each Martha Almeida jewel is handmade by Marta, who dedicates all her care, talent, experience and creativity to her creations.
In the production of jewelry, we use current equipment such as electroplating, as well as we love to apply traditional techniques such as lost wax casting, which is an ancient technique that dates back thousands of years.
In our atelier, we take a non-seasonal approach to designing our collections and intentionally keep them small to avoid overproduction and wasted materials and energy. Our jewellery is created in small batches or made to order, where each piece is created specifically for the client. This approach further reduces the risk of stockpiling and wasted resources by aligning production with actual demand. Producing only what is needed means fewer resources are extracted and less waste is generated.
Our Packaging
Our jewelry is carefully packaged using FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified materials and produced in Europe.
FSC certification guarantees that the wood and other fibrous materials used in packaging come from responsibly managed forests, protecting biodiversity, ecosystems and the rights of forest workers.
By choosing FSC packaging, we contribute to sustainable forest management and prevent illegal deforestation.
All packaging is recyclable.
Even though we are a small workshop, Martha Almeida Jewellery believes that every choice counts. Our social responsibility is a fundamental pillar in creating jewelry that is not only beautiful, but also ethical and conscious. By valuing people at every stage of the process, from the origin of the raw material to the hands of those who wear our creations, we build a brand with purpose and integrity.
